Geodesic Search Engine extension

This extension has been proven to dramatically increase search engine rankings for Geodesic-powered websites.

This extension has been designed to fully integrate into the Enterprise editions of the GeoClassifieds and GeoAuctions products. It is also available to users of the Premier, Basic and Lite editions.

By default, Geodesic auction and classified sites do not have search engine friendly URLs and are also missing some key information on their pages that search engines use to determine the placement of the page in their search results.

What are search engine friendly URLs?

"URL" is short for Uniform Resource Locator, it is an address of a resource on the Internet. Google's URL is http://www.google.com - it uniquely identifies Google's homepage.

Database-driven websites, such as Geodesic ones, use identifiers in their URLs to point to data items in their database - this results in URLs such as www.cars.com/index.php?a=5&b=10. Here, the website uses the a and b parts of the URL to find the correct information to display to the user.

URLs like the one shown above are not readable to search engines. If Google indexed the cars.com page above, the only meaningful information it could gleen from the URL is that the site is probably something to do with cars; it knows nothing about the actual page that a and b refer to. Now, if cars.com was a classified site and the data being shown by a=5&b=10 was actually and advert for a Porsche Boxster, a URL like www.cars.com/porsche_boxster.html would allow Google to see that this page contained information about a Porsche and it would place this page much higher in a search.

Below is an overview of the ways in which this extension works to improve your site. Have a look at the case study shown below to see how these can make a real difference to your search engine rankings.

  • Friendly URLs
The title of the advert is used to form a friendly URL. The a=5&b=10 elements that are used by default in Geodesic-powered URLs are no longer needed.
  • Description META tag
Some of the advert's description text is used as the Description META tag. This text will show up on search engine results to give potential customers a better idea of the advert's content.
  • Keywords META tag
The Keywords META tag is now added to all advert pages. The keywords are chosen by you to help draw even more relevant search traffic to your adverts. We can help you select good-quality, targetted keywords for your site.
  • Robots META tag
This META tag is added to all advert pages to instruct search engines to follow all links on your page(s) when they are crawling your site to add to their search index. This tag is not widely used by search engines anymore, it is added for completeness.

What are META tags?

META tags are information placed in a web-page's HTML to help machines process and make sense of the information contained on that web page.

In this case, we are most interested in adding META tags that will enable search engines to know more about your page's content when they crawl it in order to add it to their search index.

You can view an web-page's HTML code, including META tags and all other content, by selecting the Source option from the View menu in Internet Explorer.

Boatvideoadverts.com case study

Martin Chinery from boatvideoadverts.com decided to use this extension to help generate traffic to his Classified site - he was kind enough to allow us to use some before and after screenshots of his site and it's Google rankings in order to illustrate the big improvement he has seen in his search rankings after his purchase.

Below are two examples of Martin's adverts in Google before he purchased our extension:

old dragon classified

old hargrave classified

There are two major things to note with these search results:

  • The description text does not describe the boat that is being advertised. Neither the person viewing the search results (potential customers) or search engines will glean anything useful from it.
  • The URL is not search engine friendly and will not have helped to place this advert well in the results. See the What are search engine friendly URLs? green box above for details of why this is a problem for you.

Below are the two search results after the extension had been installed:

new dragon classified

new hargrave classified

As you can see, the URL is now search engine friendly and the description contains the text that the seller entered when placing the advert on Martin's site.

A big thanks to Martin Chinery at boatvideoadverts.com for allowing us to use his site in this case study.
